Lisa M. VanPay, PhD - Email
2006 PhD in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology from UW-Madison - Advisor B. Lynn Allen Hoffmann
Dissertation: Endogenous and Exogenous Inductin of AHR/ARNT Signal Transduction in Human Epidermal Cell Types
As of 2011: Public Affairs Specialist, National Science Foundation
Bio: I did both my undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, taking a year in between to gain industry experience at a small biotechnology company in California. This industry experience provided valuable insight into decision making processes that balance research with real world application.
While in graduate school, I educated groups of adults and children as a Volunteer Naturalist for the Wisconsin State Park System. This experience provided the foundation for my interest in science outreach. In addition to my laboratory work at Children¹s Hospital I pursued outreach opportunities at the Museum of Science in Boston and the MIT Museum, working to engage the public with basic science and cutting edge research.

I enjoy acting as a liaison between science and society, and I hope that increasing science literacy will help people make informed choices. I am also interested in current science policy issues and how they are addressed at the national level. In the Fall of 2008 I will begin a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship, with placement in the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs at the National Science Foundation.

John (Jack) P. Vanden Heuvel, PhD - Email - (814) 863-8532
1991 PhD in Environmental Toxicology from UW-Madison - Advisor- Richard E. Peterson 1986 BS in Pharmacology & Toxicology from UW-Madison
Dissertation: Effects of Perfluorinated Fatty Acids on Lipid Metabolism in the Rat
As of Fall 2008: Professor of Molecular Toxicology; Dept of Veterinary and Biomedical Science; Penn State University; Co-owner and Chief Scientific Officer, Indigo Bioscience, Inc.
Bio: Since leaving UW, Dr. Vanden Heuvel performed his post-doc at NIEHS in the area of molecular toxicology and chemical carcinogenesis in the laboratory of Dr. George Lucier (1991-1993). His first academic position was as Purdue University in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (1993-1996), where he returned to researching peroxisome proliferators and gene expression. In 1997, Jack left Purdue University and joined the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Penn State University, where he continues to this day. Dr. Vanden Heuvel is the course coordinator and lecturer of “Cellular and Molecular Toxicology” (VBS/BMB 433) and “Altered gene Expression by Xenobiotics” (VBS 530). He is a member of the graduate faculty in several programs including Molecular Toxicology, Pathobiology, Nutritional Sciences, Bioinformatics, Molecular Medicine and College of Medicine (MD/PhD program). Jack is co-Director of Center for Nutrigenomics and was the Program Coordinator for the undergraduate Toxicology major at Penn State. Dr. Vanden Heuvel’s laboratory continues to examine nuclear receptors responsible for the toxicologic and pharmacologic effects of several drugs and pollutants, in particular PPARs and hypolipidemic drugs. Funding for his research interests comes from NIH and several private sources. In 2005, he and a colleague started a small biotechnology company, Indigo Biosciences Inc., which provides services and products to the pharmaceutical industry.
