Outreach
Science Expeditions is a public event for kids and families to learn about new scientific research and insights through hands-on demonstrations and interactive exhibits that enable participants to experience the thrill of discovery. April 2, 2011 METC students hosted the "Explore Toxicology" exploration station where kids and parents could play Tox Land, a new game developed by METC students that teaches kids how to help the environment. The concepts of acids and bases were demonstrated through a challenge to test the acidity of common household products like soda. "Toxic Incarnation" was a fun activity for kids and adults in which toxin uptake by plants was demonstrated using white carnations and food coloring.
April Fool's Data Club
METC students organize a group called Tox Data Club in which students and post-docs informally discuss data, practice presentations, and get feedback on experiment optimization and trouble-shooting. To kick off our first data club (April 1, 2011) we had a presentation mash-up where students submitted a few slides on their projects and had to present the slides of a fellow student's presentation. The winner this year was Kristina Blanke who did an amazing job describing the effects of atrazine on memory despite her true research focus on SNPs of cytochrome b5.
Wednesday Night at the Lab 4th Annual Hands-On Science Fest
On Wednesday, December 15 2010, METC students hosted a hands-on toxicology station at Wednesday Night at the Lab, a public forum for families to learn more about a variety of scientific concepts. Activities included a game to test acidity of unknown solutions, a game to demonstrate how chemicals are affected by the water cycle, and an activity to show how plants can absorb chemicals in the environment.
