Research
A developmental mutation detected by its strong effect on neoplasia is the Multiple intestinal neoplasia (Min) allele of the murine Apc gene (adenomatous polyposis coli). A network of genes impinging on its neoplastic phenotypes is being discovered.

One modifier locus, Mom1, confers tumor resistance by encoding a locally active secretory phospholipase. A second modifier locus, Dnmt, seems to control by DNA methylation the activity of a negative regulator of tumor growth. The range of action of modifying genes and their effects on the clonal structure of intestinal tumors are being studied in chimeric mice.
