Research as of August 2006
I am looking at the biosynthetic pathway of astaxanthin production in the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma. My research focuses on the last part of the pathway from beta carotene to astaxanthin to determine which enzymes regulate this part of the pathway and the genes that code for them. This last part of the pathway is the part of the pathway where molecular oxygen is added.

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that protects yeast by reducing reactive oxygen species. It is also sold commercially as an antioxidant for humans and is often referred to as the “Super Vitamin E” due to its high antioxidant activity.
