Zebrafish have the unique ability to regenerate injured spinal cord, retina, fins and more recently the heart. Humans and other vertebrate species lack the ability to regenerate damaged cardiac tissue and instead undergo myocardial hypertrophy and display scar formation. This makes the zebrafish an excellent model to understand the molecular mechanisms by which heart regeneration occurs. Environmental contaminants such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) have been found to inhibit the normal healing process in zebrafish by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway. Changes in cell proliferation, epicardial cell activation and myocardial differentiation are currently being investigated to understand this process.
