Why UW-Madison
The application packet consists of various pieces of information for the Admission Committee. All pieces must be completed and submitted by the December 15th deadline for the Committee to review your application. Committee will only be given "complete" applications.
PARTS OF THE APPLICATION PACKETApplication: All applications are now submitted online through the UW-Madison Graduate School website. You will be assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and can create a password if you choose to access your application at a later date. Once you have submitted your completed application, it will be made available to the program(s) that you are applying to.
Application Fee: The application fee is required by the UW-Madison Graduate School. All applications will have a non-refundable application fee applied. Payment can be made by VISA or Mastercard, Debit/ATM card, personal check, or money order drawn from a bank located in the United States. Once you have submitted your online application, you will be given direction on how to pay the application fee.
You can apply for up to three programs with a single application fee.
Statement of Research Interest/Personal Statement: This statement is an opportunity to tell the METC Admission Committee who you are and should include things such as: - Your research interests and future career goals
- Why you have chosen to apply for graduate study in the METC program
- Previous research experience
- Statement of research interests
- Faculty in the METC program that are of interest to you. Or if there are faculty from outside our program that are of great interest to you, please indicate those individuals as well.
- Any extraneous information or discrepancies in application materials including, but not limited to: information regarding low GPA during a specific semester(s), low GRE scores, time off from school, or a career change
- Information about yourself regarding character, work ethic, etc.
The Admissions Committee reads numerous statements, so strive to stand out by making the statement personable.
Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation should be submitted from a minmum of three people who are familiar with your research experience or academic background, such as research advisors and/or professors. We highly encourage them to be submitted through the electronic application process, however we will accept through the U.S. Mail.
To submit a letter electronically, fill out the contact information for each recommender as part of your online application form. The Graduate School will email the individual with information on how to submit their letter. Please notify recommenders before submitting their names electronically so they know to expect an email from UW-Madison Graduate School.
Applications are frequently delayed due to incomplete recommendation letters. Our office will send applicants a notice of missing materials, however keep in mind that it is the responsibility of the applicant to remind recommenders to submit their letters to the Graduate School in a timely manner.
Graduate Records Examination (GRE) scores: GRE scores are required as part of the METC application process. The general test consists of verbal, quantitative and written analytical section. The Subject Test (Chemistry; Biology; or Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology) is not required, however it is highly recommended as these scores are necessary for National Science Foundation Fellowships and some other sources of support. You should take the GRE exam in early fall to ensure the timely receipt of your scores. We will accept GRE scores from within the last five years. Note the institution code for the UW-Madison in 1846.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores: Per UW-Madison Graduate School requriement, all applicants whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate instruction was not in English, must provide official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). Scores must be from within the last two calendar years. Applicants affected by this requirement should take one of these exams by early fall to ensure the timely receipt of their scores. Note the institution code for the UW-Madison in 1846. Note: Admitted applicants whose TOEFL paper-based test score is below 600, TOEFL computer-based test (CBT) score below 250, TOEFL internet-based test (iBT)score is below 92, or MELAB test score is below 82 must register for any recommended English as a Second Language (ESL) course during the 1st semester of enrollment.
Transcripts: Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities you have attended. Submitting unofficial transcripts during application process is accetable, however official transcripts MUST be submitted to METC as soon as possible following admission.
Summary of Accomplishments/CV: This document will highlight the exemplary aspectes of your background, including: - Awards received
- Authored publications
- Scientific presentations
- Research experience (including name of PI and description summary of work performed)
- Any other information you feel will contribute to your application
The Admissions Committee considers all of the above criteria as a whole in recommending acceptance into the program, as well as current availability of departmental resources. Students that meet or surpass minimum departmental application standards are reviewed for possible phone or in-person interviews. Applicants who meet the standards but are not initially recommended for admission are placed on a waiting list until the recruitment process is completed, typically in April.
Science Credit Form: This form is a list of undergraduate science courses taken and the calculation of your undergraduate science courses grade point average needs to be completed and returned to the METC Graduate Program Coordinator via email attachment. Please Email to request this form. This form will help identify courses in progress or to be taken before you enter the program. If you have completed post-baccalaureate courses, record them and calculate their GPA on a duplicate of the form.
When submitting your application materials, be careful not to confuse the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center with separate programs at the UW-Madison with similar names.

Course Prerequisites
The course prerequisites for the program are as follows.
Required Before Entry- Chemistry — Four semesters, including one of organic chemistry
- Biology — Three semesters, including general genetics
- Physics – One semester of math-based physics
If these course are not taken before entry, they must be made up as a deficiency if accepted for admission.
Highly Recommended Before Entry- Analytical chemistry - One semester for students intending to declare an environmental focus.
- Biochemistry — One semester of an introductory course equivalent to University of Wisconsin-Madison Biochemistry 501. If not completed before entry, must be completed as part of the program and will count toward fulfilling credit requirements of the program.
- Calculus — One or more semesters.
- Physics — A second semester of math-based physics.
- Statistics, Biometrics, or Equivalent — One semester. If not completed before entry, an experimentally based statistics course, such as UW-Madison Statistics 541 or 571, must be completed as part of the program and will count toward fulfilling credit requirements of the program.
