Faculty Milestones
  • Smith's research into the molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol's damage to the fetus was awarded the MERIT designation by the National Institutes of Health in August 2007. The MERIT R37 recognizes research of especial significance and originality.
  • Prolla - Accelerated Aging - Understanding mechanism of accelerated aging. Mitochondrial DNA Mutations, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptosis in Mammalian Aging. Science 2005 Jul; 309:481-484.
  • Johnson - Nrf2 - Description of molecular mechanism by which transcription factor Nrf2, bound to the promoter sequence ARE (antioxidant responsive element) protects different cell types, providing therapeutic potential in prevention of carcinogenesis and neurodegenerative diseases. Title: Protection from mitrochondrial complex II inhibition in vitro and in vivo by Nrf2-mediated transcription. Proc Natl Acad Sci 2005 Jan 4; 102(1):244-9. Nrf2, a multi-organ protector? FASEB J 2005 July; 19(9):1061-1066.

Faculty Companies
  • Isomark, LLC - This company is based on WARF patents developed by the founders for the early detection of infectious disease using biomarkers in breath. Scientist from UW-Madison founded Isomark, LLC including METC faculty Mark Cook, PhD and Warren Porter, Phd. Isomark's patented technology offers a unique non-invasive method for rapid detection of invasive infections. Goal is to assist healthcare providers achieve a critical need for earlier and more accurate diagnostic techniques.
  • Functional Biosciences is a microfluidics company developed by Christopher A. Bradfield, PhD. This company uses proprietary technology developed to perform genomic analyses in nanoliter volumes. The company currently offers a line of genomics services and is developing the technology for toxicogenomics applications.
  • 2004 - Mithridion Inc. - Established 2004 based on UW-Madison research in the Jeffrey A. Johnson, PhD. A biopharmaceutical company that discovers and develops drugs for neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease. Mithridion has exciting drug leads with neuroprotective properties at the heart of its drug design and development program. These leads are being synthesized and modified by Mithridion’s medicinal chemists to build in the desired drug properties, such as dosage route and duration of action.
