Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
Summer Research Opportunities Program
for Minority Students
May 29 - August 4, 2012
Application Deadline: February 15, 2012 - APPLY Starting 11/15/11
Purpose
The purpose of this program is to provide traditionally underrepresented minority undergraduate students hands-on research experience in molecular and environmental toxicology; as well as career exploration and weekly tutorial sessions.
Four to six minority undergraduates will work with UW-Madison faculty affiliated with the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center and researchers in their lab, on ongoing toxicology related projects over the summer. Students will be mentored in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, immunotoxicology, environmental toxicant remediation, or other projects.
In 2011 the program is under the direction of Christopher A. Bradfield, PhD , Professor of Oncology & Director of Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center. We also consolidated our efforts with the Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program (IBS-SRP). This program is coordinated by Janet Branchaw.
Between 1994 and 2009 our Summer Research Opportunities Program was funded by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (T35 ES07295). Charles J. Czuprynski, PhD, professor with Pathobiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine was the Principal Investigator on this grant.
Program Training
A faculty mentor guides each undergraduate through the student research project. Research areas include Biochemical and Genetic Toxicology, Immunotoxicology, and Neurotoxicology, depending on the trainer. Here at UW-Madison/METC you can be part of the solution! Many topic areas are possible such as cancer, genetics, aging, prion (mad cow) disease, neuroprotection, oxidative stress, human development.
A weekly toxicology group tutorial is held to provide an introduction to Molecular and Environmental Toxicology. Each week you will have the opportunity to have small group learning/discussion with a different professional in the field of toxicology.
In addition to research, students receive guidance on toxicology careers, research opportunities in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology, and information about other graduate programs. Students participate in seminars concerning the graduate school application process, laboratory safety and ethics, writing scientific research papers, minority graduate student life, and applying for fellowships. At the end of the 9-week program, students present an oral report on their research during a research symposium.
Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent U.S. residents and underprepresented minority, which includes:African American American Indian/Alaskan/Hawaiian Cambodian Hispanic/Latino Hmong Laotian Vietnamese
